Lophophora williamsii: the goof by God that man corrects with laws. Illegal in many countries, including the US; all species (including L. diffusa) illegal in California; going by names like peyote, button, cactus pudding, devil's root, diablo, dry whiskey, dumpling, Indian dope, mescal, white mule, and grandfather; this must be one bad critter. Used as a sacrament in religious ceremonies since at least 300 BC, in more modern times peyote has been deemed a menace and pariah to society. Peyote first ran into trouble with the law from Spanish ecclesiastics in the 1700's. A manual told Missionaries to ask potential converts "Have you eaten the flesh of man? Have you eaten Peyote?" Another priest asked "Dost thou suck the blood of others? Dost thou wander about at night, calling upon demons to help thee? Hast thou drunk Peyote or given it to others to drink, in order to discover secrets or to discover where stolen or lost articles were?" The use of peyote as a religious sacrament spread north from Mexico through the US and Canada over the last 3 centuries via such plains tribes as the Navajo, Commanche, Sioux, and Kiowa. Shaman of these tribes viewed peyote as a boon, replacing the hallucinogenic but dangerous (lethally toxic) red mescal bean (Sophora secundiflora) as a ceremonial sacrament. Today, media like eBay even make the word "peyote" illegal (even in the context of "false peyote" or "not peyote"). Now look at the photo of that dumpling and tell me why it is SO evil...It would be a felony for you to order or BIGFOOT to sell this plant, so please don't try.
